  • Job Description

    Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Business Performance, the VP, Research and Development will be responsible for all product development initiatives and for effectively managing the Research and Development department, as well as motivating and mentoring the Research and Development team.



    • Lead and direct end-to-end product development, product re-formulation and product/packaging redesign efforts, overseeing the Product Development department.
    • Evaluate the potential of product ideas and business opportunities and present recommendations.
    • Capability to successfully manage and deliver 60+ NPD projects on ongoing basis.
    • Manage overall business relationships with major corporate customers and provide technical expertise to drive solutions to key customer product development needs, challenges and
    • desires.
    • Translate product visions into actionable design specifications based on the specific food science of proteins and related elements.
    • Capability to define and develop product designs in terms of both costing and operational implementation within Sofina facilities. Full responsibility for direct cost of goods for NPD.
    • Responsibility for identification of capital requirements, supply chain risks, operational risks etc. in conjunction with appropriate departments.
    • Oversee development and transfer of SOP’s to plants. Clarify execution of product launches with sales and marketing functions.
    • Develop comprehensive understanding of capacities and capabilities of Sofina equipment and plant production operations.
    • Prepare resource plans and manage overall resource allocation for the PD team.
    • Develop and enhance direct reports through effective coaching techniques.


    Education & Experience

    • Relevant Bachelor’s degree in a technically oriented field, preferably food science or engineering.

    • A minimum of 20 years progressive experience in a food manufacturing environment with at least 10 years in a leadership role in R&D and product development.

    • Demonstrated food science expertise.

    • Experience specifically in the meat and poultry segment of the food industry is an asset.

    • Demonstrated experience in Project Management

    • Practical ground floor approach to executing technical challenges and projects

    • High sense of urgency; customer service expertise

    • Keen interest in fostering continuous improvement and moving the organization forward.

    • Analytical ability; methodical thinker and problem solver; attention to detail

    • Computer literacy (intermediate MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint)

    • Expertise in PLM and PMO software programs, an asset
